Jamie shines as Sully win their way to Lords

From the archive, first published Thursday 12th Aug 2004.

SULLY Centurions made history last Sunday when they defeated Findon from Sussex in the semi-final of the nPower Village Cup at Sully.

Saturday was business as usual when local rivals Penarth visited Sully for a vital league game for both sides. Sully are top of the table while Penarth are in need of points to avoid relegation.

Centurions batted first and yet again the Sylvester brothers Jamie and Ryan gave them a solid start with a 94-run partnership. Jamie was caught for 36 and Ryan went on to make a superb 82 in the total of 232 from 50 overs.

Penarth made a bad start and when Centurions took the vital wicket of Richard Skone for 4 the floodgates opened and Penarth were all out for 98.

Centurions 232 ao. R Sylvester 81, J Sylvester 36, L Smith 30, M Newbold 20. M Frost 3-51, J Docherty 2-31.

Penarth 98 ao. D Ricketts 29. N Gage 4-15, J Sylvester 3-16.

All roads led to Burnham Avenue on Sunday when visitors Findon brought 150 supporters.

Top of the table and champions for the past three years, Findon surprisingly put Sully in to bat, a decision they came to regret.

Ryan and Jamie Sylvester started in confident mood and with 12 overs gone had 51 on the board. When Ryan went for 34 O'Shea joined his skipper and they took the score to 113 before O'Shea was out for 21.

Sylvester was awesome in the last eight overs, when supported by Gage, he peppered the boundary and the pair put on 88 runs.

Sylvester finished on a brilliant 138 not out and Centurions reached the formidable total of 251-4 at the end of their 40 overs.

Although Findon made a good start it was a huge target.

Skipper Sylvester took a superb catch to dismiss the dangerous Waller for 55, but Stuart put bat to ball for a superb half century.

Jamie Sylvester was having a magic afternoon and at 211 he took the catch that put Centurions on the road to Lords with Stuart out for 57.

The last wicket belonged to his brother Ryan and a pitch invasion followed to celebrate a great moment in the 50-year history of the club.

The Lords date is Sunday, August 22. Call on 734762 daytime, 530896 evening, or Jamie Sylvester, Cardiff 409398 for details of bus travel.

This Sunday why not come to Sophia Gardens, 1.30pm start, for the Welsh Cup Final against Pontardulais.
