Tribute to one of life's champions

From the archive, first published Thursday 12th Aug 2004.

DEVASTATED friends of popular skating champion Richard Taylor are calling for a lasting memorial in the town.

Pals of the 23-year-old, who died on Sunday, August 8, want the Knap Skating Park dedicated to the memory of a man they describe as a 'lionheart' and 'a generous soul.'

Richard, the British in-line skating champion lost his fight for life after a collision with a lamppost left him with both legs broken and a fractured skull.

He had been skating with friends on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 3, when the accident happened at the junction of Miskin Street.

It is these fellow skaters who are now calling for a solid tribute to remember 'someone who made the world a better place'

Speaking at the Knap skating park on Tuesday night, Scott Wilcox, 24, said: "Rich was generous, always had a smile on his face and was always there if you had a problem. He'll never be forgotten."

Mark Lane, who flew home form Norway when he heard the news, added: "Richard was a great guy, full of life and always smiling. We would like the skating park done up and named after him."

These sentiments are echoed by Richard's heartbroken family - his dad John, 53, mum Gaynor, 53, and brother Robert, 20.

And popular local businessman John is determined Richard's life will be celebrated, not mourned.

He told the News: "Richard knew the dangers of his sport but was passionate about it.

"We were fortunate to know Richard. The way he lived his life to the full and was always smiling helps us remember him the way we want to.

"We spoke about organ donation and we were only too proud to honour his wish. It's comforting to know he helped save lives."

Mr Taylor added: "A week before the accident we talked about his future. He said he was completely happy - what more can a father ask?"

Richard's funeral will be held in High Street's Trinity Church at 1.45pm on Thursday, August 19.
