Tip-off nets stolen goods

From the archive, first published Thursday 12th Aug 2004.

BARRY police have snagged a massive haul of stolen goods thanks to an anonymous tip-off.

Officers swooped on an address after a phone call from a concerned member of the public suggested stolen goods were being kept on the premises.

The address cannot be given by the police as the case is still active.

PC Simon Morgan was part of the team involved in the operation. He told the News: "We had a call that suggested a certain premises was being used to store stolen property. After an intelligence-led operation, which included a level of surveillance to confirm this information, a warrant was drawn up and the team executed it on Tuesday, August 3.

"When we gained access, we found a large amount of gardening equipment was being stored."

Among the recovered property were specialised horticultural implements as well as a number of lawn mowers and strimmers.

PC Morgan added: "We have reason to believe the property we recovered from this one house has all been stolen in the last six weeks after a spate of attacks on sheds and garages around the Barry area.

"At the beginning of the summer we launched Operation Akrotiri, which warned people about leaving their sheds, garages and outhouses unsecured.

"This latest action proves the police's commitment to the fight against this type of crime, and we rely heavily on the co-operation of the public to assist us in this matter."

The stolen goods have been taken to Barry Police Station on Gladstone Road.

PC Morgan added: "Anyone who has been the victim of a shed or garage burglary in the last two months should contact the station and arrange a time to view the items we recovered. If there is a way they can prove any of the objects taken from this operation belong to them, we would be delighted to reunite them with their equipment."

To arrange a viewing, contact CID on 01446 731606 extension 32421.
